What is a Sleep Technician

Also called a Polysomnographic Technician, these professionals are trained to perform sleep studies and other tests used by a physician to diagnoses and treat sleep disorders.  They can work in hospitals, private sleep centers, research facilities or clinics.

growing need for sleep technicians

The need for sleep technicians is expected to continue to grow in the coming years due to an increased awareness of sleep disorders.

It is estimated that over 30 million people have sleep apnea alone in the United States and only about 5 million currently are being treated.  It is also estimated that over 50-70 million people have a sleep disorder.

A career path for Sleep Technicians can include taking and passing the CPSGT exam,  then working as a CPSGT for 6 months to a year gaining experience to sit for the RPSGT exam.  The CPSGT credential is valid for up to 3 years.  Individuals must take and pass the RPSGT exam to continue working in the field.  The RPSGT credential is considered the gold standard for sleep technologist credentialing.
